Written to the prompt E is for Expecting
The Internet Date
I didn’t expect you to turn up –
Nobody’s turned up before.
I’ve had people say that they would do;
Not one of them’s come through that door.
I didn’t expect you’d be handsome –
Your photo was quite true to life.
I didn’t expect you’d be single –
With your looks you should have a wife.
I never expected the flowers –
My first ever roses, you know;
I’ve often imagined the pleasure
Of a dozen, tied up in a bow.
I didn’t expect you’d dress formal
In wing-collar shirt and bow tie;
The carriage ride, too, was surprising:
Just us two under clear moonlit sky.
I didn’t expect the fine dining,
The candlelit table, the wine;
I’d read of such things in romances,
Not thinking they’d ever be mine.
I didn’t expect the attention –
The warmth in your eyes and to be
Hand in hand as we walked in the moonlight –
These things just don’t happen to me.
I didn’t expect to go dancing,
To waltz round the floor in your arms;
I didn’t expect I’d be falling
For your irresistible charms.
I didn’t expect that you’d ask me
To go back to yours for champagne.
You showed me that life was for living;
If one thing I’d lose, all to gain.
I’ve been disappointed so often
I kept my emotions in check,
Which proved rather hard to accomplish
When you kissed me and nuzzled my neck.
I thought I knew where this was leading,
And thought it’d be worth the pain,
But I was surprised when you bit me,
Your teeth sinking into my vein.
Thanks to you I can now live forever!
I can transform from human to bat!
’Cos you made me into a vampire –
And I never expected that!
