Various forms of transport: car, bus, train, tram, trolleybus, steamroller, tractor, ambulance, military vehicle…
Is your character doing the driving, or are they being driven?
Where to? What for? Who’s with them? What are they feeling? Excited / anxious/ scared /bored / filled with dread? Do they have to be somewhere at a certain time? If they’re not, what are the consequences? What, if anything, happens on the journey?
That’s a fairly broad sweep, but you could focus it in on the vehicle that’s being driven. What condition is it in? Is it a joy or a nightmare to drive? What memories does it hold for whoever’s travelling in it? What does it mean to its owner?
You can also have drive in the sense of ‘to drive out’ or ‘to drive away’, as in the Highland Clearances when people were driven off the land to make way for sheep grazing.
There’s drive in the sense of determination, get-up-and-go…
There’s drive as a sporting term – in cricket and golf…
You could have drive as in a social occasion at which people compete in a game such as a whist drive, a beetle drive, etc.
There’s your own drive, if you’re lucky enough to have one, in front of your house. Just think of the people who come on to your drive and what could happen on there…
You’ve got drive in the sense of driving cattle and other animals… which leads us to drive as in ‘you’re going to drive me up the wall’…
So, plenty to go at.
As usual: Where? Why? Who? When? What’s the situation?
