Carol Carman’s Writing Club Prompt: I is for Iron

This week – the prompt is I is for iron.

This prompt can open up lots of areas for you to explore.

There’s iron as in the metal – think of all the things that can be made from iron: gates, railings, pans, the trivets on a gas hob, waffle irons, branding irons, golf clubs, old horseshoes, bridges, building frames, magnets, swords, anything made of steel has iron in it…

There’s iron filings, as used in those kids’ toys where you get a face and you can put an iron-filing beard on it…

And, of course, there’s literally an iron.

Is there an object made of iron in your story? How is it used?

You could set your story anywhere from the Iron Age to modern times.

We iron clothes, but we also iron things out, we talk of having irons in the fire… prisoners used to be clapped in irons… knives and forks are eating irons…

So, it’s the usual stuff – who, what, where, when, how and why?

Let’s hear your stories, poems, pieces of descriptive writing – don’t forget it doesn’t have to be the complete story – prompted by the word ‘iron’. But it is only a prompt. If you’ve got something else that you’re burning to write about, then write about that.

Send them to louise.hulland@bbc.co.uk and we’ll see what you’ve come up with when we meet again on 1st September.
