Carol Carman’s Writing Club Prompt: O is for Out

This could be something as simple as in ‘I’m just going out for a walk.’ Or maybe your characters have been out somewhere and they’ve just returned. Where’ve they been? What’s happened while they were out?

Out could be a warning – hostile: ‘Get out of my pub!’ or danger: ‘Get out – the roof’s caving in!’

You can find something out, the truth will out, you can wait for a book or new album to come out, you can set out your stall.

There’s knock out, throw out, a fire or candle is put out, you can be put out, outdated, cry out, out of your mind, stretch out, eat your heart out…

Out as in released from prison, or out of sight, out of mind.

And of course, people go out with one another…

So there’s plenty to go at.

As usual – who, what, where, when, how and why?

Let’s hear your stories, poems, pieces of descriptive writing – don’t forget it doesn’t have to be the complete story – prompted by the word ‘out’. But it is only a prompt. If you’ve got something else that you’re burning to write about, then write about that.

Send them to louise.hulland@bbc.co.uk and we’ll review them when we next meet on 8th December.
