Written to the prompt B is for Breakfast
Stay for Breakfast
They met, quite by chance, over breakfast –
A buffet: fruit, pastries and such.
Their hands landed on the same apple;
Both started at each other’s touch.
‘I’m sorry,’ they said, and retreated.
‘After you.’ ‘No, go on – after you.’
So they both reached again, and they giggled;
He knew then what he had to do.
He smiled and said, ‘Come on, let’s share it.’
And she was so pleased to agree.
They sat at a table together,
Just sharing the fruit of a tree.
She’d never enjoyed such a breakfast
As she did at the start of that day,
And although her lips wouldn’t let her,
She desperately wanted to say:
‘Come back to mine. Stay for breakfast.
I’ll give you whatever I can.
You can have the full works if you’re hungry,
And you look like a big breakfast man.
Oh, come back to mine. Stay for breakfast.
I’ll make sure you’re well satisfied.
I’ll give you hot rolls if you want them –
Just ask me, you won’t be denied.’
They finished their breakfast, then parted.
She thought about him all that day,
Cursing herself for not voicing
The words that she’d wanted to say.
Their paths crossed again, and determined
To tell him the thought in her head,
She plucked up her courage and opened her mouth
But never got chance, ’cause he said:
‘Come back to mine. Stay for breakfast.
I’ll give you whatever you need.
I do believe that you are starving:
I I sense that you’d love a good feed.
It’ll be on a plate when you’re ready,
Hot and steaming, if you’re in the mood,
And if you’re still hungry, have seconds,
My larder holds plenty of food.’
She gladly accepted his offer
Her fasting had gone on too long.
Presented with prospect of feasting,
Refusing would simply be wrong.
So she went back to his, stayed for breakfast.
They raided his pantry with vigour,
And now they’ve a bun in the oven
Their food bill’s just got that bit bigger.
