Poem: The Fancy-Dress Party

Written to the prompt G is for Gold

The Fancy-Dress Party

We’ve just had a fancy dress party – our family and some of our friends –

It was really quite funny to see the grown-ups getting dressed up and playing ‘pretends’.

My grandmother came as a teabag, and grandfather came as a bat,

And Daddy turned out as King Arthur, while Mummy dressed up as a cat.

Aunty Christine turned up as a pirate, with an eyepatch, a sword and some gold;

Cousin Steven was dressed just like Tarzan, which must have been terribly cold.

Mr Smith from next door was a sailor, and his wife, Mrs Smith, was a nun,

And their son came as Paddington Bear, and their daughter as Santa Claus joined in the fun.

Uncle Cyril turned up as a jockey, with his jodhpurs and hard hat, of course,

Which was good because two of my cousins turned up as the halves of a pantomime horse!

Sophie’s father came dressed as a milkman, her mother came dressed as a nurse,

And Michael her poor injured patient, which Daddy said could have been worse.

Simon, my brother, was Kermit, and David, his friend, was a tree,

And Jonathon came as a cowboy, and Uncle Stan came as a bee.

Aunt Maggie turned up as a shepherd! She’d even brought two sheep along!

And Sophie and I went as angels, which everyone said seemed quite wrong.

The whole thing was very exciting, till Sophie and I had to sleep,

And we found when we got up next morning – our wings had been eaten by sheep!
